Solar System -- Dione & Tethys

Mid-Sized Moons of the Sixth Planet
Dione and Tethys
  • These two moons, as well as Rhea, are probably the most "typical" moons of Saturn.
  • They are bright, covered with ice, and heavily cratered.
  • The only remarkable features are:
    • Patchy areas of darker tone.
    • Scattered swaths of bright material, seemingly draped across the craters, like a thin veil of dust.
  • Dark regions probably regions of soil concentration.
  • Bright swaths may be frost deposit
    • Cause of the brigter and darker areas is really not understood.
  • Geologically, old impact craters dominate the landscape.
  • Fractures have created a few sizable canyons
  • They are less heated and less modified by internally generated geologic forces than larger worlds.
