  • The fourth asteroid to be discovered, it was first viewed in 1807.
  • Among the 100 or more largest asteroids, Vesta is the only one with a surface of lava-rock, as revealed by spectral observations.
  • Vesta is the third-larges asteroid at 500 kilometers (311 miles) across.
  • It appears covered with basaltic rock.
